Vivaldi E Minor

The Credo in E minor (RV 591) is the only extant setting of the Nicene Creed by Antonio Vivaldi. Another setting exists (RV 592) but is of dubious authenticity.

  2. Vivaldi E Minor Trio Sonata Rv 67
  3. Vivaldi E Minor Sonata Viola
  4. Vivaldi Sonata E Minor Rv 40
  5. Vivaldi E Minor Bassoon Concerto

This Sonata by Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) was originally in the key of D minor, and written for Flute & Guitar (plus continuo). John Zaradin has played his own flute & guitar duo version for many years (in D minor) but found that as a guitar solo, the key of E minor suits the instrument best. Cello Sonata in E minor, RV 40 Antonio Vivaldi wrote a set of six sonatas for cello and continuo, written between 1720 and 1730, and published in Paris in 1740 by Leclerc and Boivin. These sonatas were published without an opus number; sometimes they are improperly called op.

Settings[edit]

RV 591[edit]

Vivaldi E Minor
Figure 1. Measures 1 and 2 of the Violini I e II staff of RV 591.

RV 591 has four movements. In a style similar to his psalm setting of In exitu Israel (RV 604), the first movement adorns the chorus' simple rhythms of crotchets and minims with the orchestra playing semiquavers and quavers. The second movement is a brief choral episode in the stile antico, borrowing thematic material from the composer's Magnificat. The fourth movement is based on a semiquaver-quaver motif similar to the first movement, and closes with a fugue.

Figure 2. Measures 129 and 130 of the Violino I staff of RV 588.

The first (and final) movements open with a motif which bears similarity to a brief passage found in the first movement of the Gloria (RV 588).

Movements[edit]

  2. Et incarnatus est
  3. Crucifixus
  4. Et Resurrexit

Misc. NotesFrom the Coutan archives. Paul Coutan studied this edition under Paul Bazelaire's tutelage, but only the penultimate sonata. Accordingly it has been scanned also in color for the markings to stand out. Introductory notes (French only) by Henry Expert who indicates that the editors received communication of the 1740 edition through the hands of Henry Prunières.
